SUMMARY:

"The story of Christian theology has often been divisive and disjointed. Providing a companion volume to his earlier work The story of Christian theology, Roger Olson thematically traces out Christian belief down through the ages, revealing a pattern of both unity and diversity. He finds a consensus of teaching that is both unitive and able to incorporate a faithful diversity when not forced into the molds of false either-or alternatives. The mosaic that emerges from Olson's work displays a mediating evangelical theology that is nonspeculative and irenic in spirit and tone. Specifically written with the nonspecialist in mind, Olson has masterfully sketched out the contours of Christian faith with simplicity while avoiding oversimplification."--

SUMMARY:

The Mosaic of Atonement offers a fresh and integrated approach to historic models of atonement. While modern treatments of the doctrine have tended toward either a defensive hierarchy, in which one model is singled out as most important, or a disconnected plurality, in which multiple images are affirmed but with no order of arrangement, this book argues for a reintegration of four famous "pieces" of atonement doctrine through the governing image of Christ-shaped mosaic. Unlike a photograph in which tiny pixels present a seamless blending of color and shape, a mosaic allows each piece to retain its recognizable particularity, while also integrating them in the service of a single larger image. If one stands close, one can identify individual squares of glass or tile that compose the greater picture. And if one steps back, there is the larger picture to be admired. Yet in the great mosaics of age-old Christian churches, the goal is not for viewers to construct the image, as in a puzzle, but to appreciate it. So too with this mosaic of atonement doctrine. While no one model is set above or against the others, the book notes particular ways in which the "pieces"--the feet, heart, head, and hands--mutually support one another to form a more holistic vision of Christ's work. "This is my body," Jesus said to his followers, and by reintegrating these oft-dismembered aspects of atonement, we will note fresh ways in which it was given for us.

SUMMARY:

Pastor Tim Lundstrom has two weeks to decide. Soon he will preside over his daughter Gracie's wedding--a blessing he has long prayed for--but as the day approaches, he finds himself dreading its arrival. Tim harbors a shameful secret: he has lost his faith. Revealing himself risks losing Gracie, his adored and only child; his vulnerable autistic grandson, Luke; his dutiful second wife; and the evangelical community he has nurtured at his small Texas church. But the price of silence is steep. Performing the ceremony as a nonbeliever will taint Gracie's wedding and bind him forever to the secret that isolates him from those he loves. He isn't the only one hiding the truth. Josephine Wallis, an accomplished pathologist, has yet to reveal the news of her pregnancy to her longtime boyfriend. Compounding her worries is the looming deadline of the wedding--will her intellectually disabled younger sister be ready to live on her own when Gracie and Luke move out of the apartment the three now share? A poignant exploration of the boundaries of trust and the repercussions of secrets, A Mosaic of Grace captivates with its skillful weaving of the lives of the Lundstrom and Wallis families as they wrestle with uncertainty and stumble towards acceptance. "Written with a deft understanding of what it means to be human, A Mosaic of Grace is a heartfelt portrait of two families struggling to meet the expectations of love and community in the face of wavering faith."--Daniel Burgess, New York Book Editors An interview with the author: Q: Disability, in the form of autism, epilepsy, and intellectual disability, figures prominently in the novel. Why did you choose to focus on this subject? A: First, let me say that this is not a novel about the testing of faith due to disability. In writing, the adage is "write what you know," and disability has played a large role in my professional and personal life. The character of Luke is a snapshot of my older son at age nine. The first line of the novel--"What name this one is it?"--is a direct quote. Q: Why tackle a subject as emotionally charged as religion? I find it fascinating that discussing religion is considered taboo. I suppose it's because our belief systems are so intricately tied with our identities--so for some, considering another group's worldview can feel like a challenge to their own. But religion claims to answer man's biggest questions, so why wouldn't we want to examine various perspectives and see what can be learned? Christianity is the religion used in the book, but the same story could be told in the context of any religion. The premise is the same: What is at stake when you are part of a devout community and your beliefs differ from those that you love? Q: Most of the characters in both of the book's families carry secrets. Do you think that's an accurate depiction of family life, or did you dramatize for the sake of the novel? A: Well, secrets are compelling and dramatic by nature. What's interesting to me is the fact that there's no way of knowing what's accurate, because we can't read others' minds. Secrets come in all shapes and sizes, and we all choose how much information to share with the people that come into our lives. Where are these lines drawn, and why? What are the consequences of such decisions? The answers to these questions are the crux of the story.

SUMMARY:

What did writers in the Reformed tradition mean by suggesting that the Covenant of Works with Adam has been republished in the Mosaic Covenant? Not all forms of this doctrine of "republication" are the same. Merit and Moses is a critical evaluation of a particular version of the republication doctrine--one formulated by Meredith G. Kline and espoused in The Law Is Not of Faith (2009). At the heart of this discussion is the attribute of God's justice and the Reformed view of merit. Has classic Augustinian theology been turned on its head? Does--or can--God make a covenant at Sinai with fallen people by which Israel may merit temporal blessings on the basis of works? Have "merit" and "justice" been redefined in the service of Kline's works-merit paradigm? The authors of Merit and Moses examine the positions of John Murray and Norman Shepherd with respect to the reactionary development of the Klinean republication doctrine. Klinean teachings are shown to swing wide of the Reformed tradition when held up to the plumb line of the Westminster Standards, which embody the Reformed consensus on covenant theology and provide a faithful summary of Scripture.
